How We Estimate Calories

Step 1: Your resting burn

Your body burns calories every minute of the day just keeping you alive — breathing, circulating blood, maintaining tissue. That's your resting metabolic rate, and it accounts for the majority of what you burn in a day.

We calculate yours using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which dietitians generally consider the most accurate of the widely used formulas. It needs four things, all pulled from your profile: height, weight, date of birth and sex.

Step 2: How hard your body fought the temperature

Contrast therapy doesn't burn calories through movement. It burns them because your body has to work to hold its core temperature steady. How much extra work depends entirely on what you're doing:

Cold plunge. Water pulls heat out of you roughly 25 times faster than air, so your body fires back with shivering and a hormone surge. In genuinely cold water this can push your metabolism to nearly five times resting — the measured ceiling of human shivering.

Cold shower. The same response, dialed way down. Only part of your skin is wet at any moment and you're standing in air, so we scale the effect to a fraction of a full plunge.

Sauna and steam room. Sitting in heat is metabolically close to sitting in a chair. The one real effect is that chemical reactions in your body speed up slightly as your core temperature rises — about 10% for each degree Celsius. A sauna only moves your core a degree or two, so the extra burn is small. Steam rooms run cooler but the humidity blocks sweat from evaporating, so your core climbs faster than the air temperature suggests.

Hot tub. Hot water is a bigger deal than hot air. Researchers measured people in a 104°F bath burning about 79% more energy than at rest, driven by the cardiovascular work of pushing blood to the skin.

What the number on your session means

We take your resting burn, multiply it by how hard your body was working, and multiply that by how long you were in. The figure you see is your total burn for the session — the calories you'd have burned resting, plus the extra thermal work on top.

Let's be straight about the size of these numbers

How accurate is this?

It's an estimate built from population-average physiology, not a measurement of you specifically. Expect it to be in the right ballpark rather than exact — about the same reliability as the calorie readout on a wrist wearable.

A few things we can't see: your body composition, your fitness, how hydrated you are, and how adapted you've become. That last one matters. Regular plungers shiver less than beginners, so if you're deep into a cold streak you're likely burning a little less than we show.
